Chef Melissa Martin is the chef-owner of Mosquito Supper Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, as well as a cookbook author, mother, sister and daughter. Melissa grew up on the Louisiana coast and has lived in New Orleans for 20 years. After graduating from Loyola University in New Orleans, she worked as an adult literacy teacher until she evacuated to Northern California during Hurricane Katrina. While living there, she worked at some of the top Napa Valley vineyards and restaurants; this is where she honed her self-taught culinary skills to a professional level. Martin returned to New Orleans three years later and opened Satsuma Café, a casual farm-to-table restaurant, and worked at Café Hope, a nonprofit restaurant, teaching at-risk youth to cook seasonal food.
In 2014, Melissa opened Mosquito Supper Club, where she serves a communal, multi-course tasting menu based on her personal culinary story. Her culinary repertoire is filled with the history and traditions of not only her hometown of Chauvin, Louisiana, but of all the southernmost regions of the state. Her menus reflect the building blocks that define Bayou cuisine and celebrate the ebb and flow of the seasons and the bounty of local farmers, shrimpers, oyster fishers, and crabbers. Guests reserve a place at her table months in advance.
Her first book, Mosquito Supper Club: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou, was named a Best New Cookbook by Food & Wine Magazine, Bon Appetit Magazine, NPR’s The Splendid Table, and in 2021 was named Best American Cookbook and Cookbook of the Year by the International Association of Culinary Professionals. In 2022, the cookbook won a James Beard Award for Best Book: U.S. Foodways. Melissa is currently finishing her second book and, if that isn’t enough, Melissa herself and her entire team have been nominated as finalists for The James Beard Award, Best Chef South in both 2022 and 2023.
As she does in both her restaurant and her books, Melissa will share with us a culinary glimpse into growing up on the waters and bayous of Louisiana. We couldn’t be more excited to have her join us. Melissa's dedication to her family, her community, and her team are completely aligned with our mission to grow the healthiest food possible and to use it to create and nurture community. Join us as we partner with Melissa to celebrate her extraordinary culinary talents and the bounty of Stonewood’s harvest. It’s guaranteed to be a memorable experience.
