Maya Kaimal is an award-winning cookbook author, founder of Maya Kaimal Foods and former photo editor of Saveur magazine. Her cooking reflects her upbringing in a multicultural home filled with delicious and diverse foods. She has made a career out of spotlighting regional Indian flavors and home-style techniques that are not found on Indian restaurant menus.

Raised in Boston by a South Indian father and a mother from New England, Maya’s father’s Indian cooking, combined with trips to visit family in India, piqued her interest in that cuisine from a young age. Her first book, Curried Favors: Family Recipes from South India, won the Julia Child Award for best first book. Her second book, Savoring the Spice Coast of India: Fresh Flavors from Kerala, focused on the food of the region of South India where her father was raised.

After writing cookbooks and working in magazines, Maya with her husband, journalist Guy Lawson, founded Maya Kaimal Foods in 2003 with the idea of bringing high quality Indian food to American grocery stores. She began by marketing her simmer sauces to specialty stores in New York City and instantly found a niche in the marketplace. Now based in Rhinebeck, New York, Maya oversees all product development and packaging design at her namesake company. And the brand has expanded beyond sauces to include rice, dals, condiments, and marinades. Her products have garnered many industry awards and are available nationwide at Whole Foods Market, Safeway-Albertsons, Target, Costco, and many other stores.

Maya has taught cooking classes at CIA Greystone’s World of Flavors conference, The French Culinary Institute and The Natural Gourmet Institute. She has appeared on the Today Show, Martha Stewart TV, The Food Network, and the Discovery Channel, and has written features for Saveur, Food & Wine, and Gourmet magazines.
